The idea of age-related stages of adult development comes from a companion field called lifespan developmental psychology, which focuses on the age-specific "psychosocial tasks" that need to be resolved over the course of a person's lifespan. During the 1970s, Daniel Levinson and his colleagues published The Seasons of a Man's Life, which described age-related issues faced by a sample of American males aged eighteen to forty-seven and what it took to resolve these issues successfully.
