Acknowledgments

A lot of what I know about leadership I learned from Roy Amara, who was president of the Institute for the Future in 1973 and brought me to Silicon Valley. Roy passed away on New Year’s Eve, 2007. He had leadership qualities that I have come to think of as “Roy’s gift” for future leaders. I started writing the first edition of this book right after Roy’s death. I feel called to share Roy’s gift of leadership with future leaders, as best I can.

Roy was a systematic thinker who focused on disorderly futures. He was a very strong leader in his own quiet and self-effacing way. Roy always treated people with respect, even if he disagreed with them. He encouraged spirited exchange of ideas at the Institute; there were—and are—many debates. ...
