The importance of values is frequently declared throughout organizations, societies, civic organizations, schools, families, and faith-based communities. Undoubtedly, some of the interest in values is generated by the scandal of the day—breeches of trust by individuals, ­organizations, and societal institutions. Too often, there is a lack of adherence to the ­pronounced values. Financial scams, known product defects, political deceptions, and criminal collusion undermine our organizational and societal foundations. Yes, values are important because they provide reference points for behavior and set conduct expectations.
