What's That Phone Number?

One of the first major uses for general-purpose directories was to replace the company phone book. These listings of employees and their phone numbers are frequently reprinted but chronically out-of-date. Maintaining a useful printed listing is a nontrivial task in a large company, where people frequently come and go, change locations, and change job titles. The manual labor involved in compiling the listing, printing copies, and distributing the list to hundreds or thousands of employees is considerable. In fact, by the time the listing is available, it may already be out-of-date!
