Chapter 9The First Mile and Beyond

Like most people, I am convinced that the health care system needs change—certainly in the United States, but probably all around the world as well. The introduction to part 1 of this book outlined some of the reasons. Yet it hardly matters what you or I think about the necessity of change. Advocate it or not, welcome it or not, change is happening every day. Governments and other stakeholders continually place new obligations and new restrictions on health care organizations. Sometimes they offer those organizations new opportunities as well. Consumers come with new expectations. Health care technologies continue to evolve. Standing still in the midst of this maelstrom is not an option for anybody.
