In 1991, WAIS, Gopher, and the World Wide Web were released as a means to seek out and follow information on the Internet in a far more intuitive and accessible way than the previous directory search“Archie” tools. The evolution of the World Wide Web and the emergence of the Web browser as the dominant Internet application increased the overall attraction and accessibility of the Internet to the public. In addition, it induced rapid growth in traffic levels that continue to be a challenge to network operations engineers and router vendors alike.
