Although Ankara has been the capital of Turkey since 1923, Istanbul has a far larger population (approximately 12.5 million in 2011). Istanbul is also Turkey’s economic and industrial center. Since Istanbul absorbed the district to the south (Asian) side of the Bosporus, it became the only city on earth that spans two continents: Europe and Asia. About 30 percent of the city’s population lives on the Asian side, and approximately 2.5 million people commute across the Bosporus every day.
