Arabic is the official language of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and of the other 21 countries that make up the Arab League. However, there are many variants of Arabic.

The Holy Qur’an (or Koran) was written in a form of Arabic called Classical Arabic. This formal, written form is used in religious ceremonies and by scholars, and is somewhat complex.

The version that is most commonly used in the media, by public speakers, and in schools is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). All Arab speakers can communicate through MSA, even if their local dialects are mutually unintelligible, as are Algerian (or Northern African) and Iraqi (or Levant Region) Arabic.
