Greetings are verbally enthusiastic in Japan. A lukewarm, listless “Hello” conveys apathy and will be received somewhat like a limp handshake would be in Germany.

However, traditional greetings do not involve touching anyone, ever. Be certain not to touch, hug, kiss, or in general be physically demonstrative with anyone in a work environment.

Corporate employees may bow several hundred times a day. There are multiple degrees of bowing, and Japanese learn all the intricacies from childhood or at juku schools. Watch what others do, and attempt to emulate them.
