As a foreigner, you are expected to be on time. Although punctuality is not a traditional virtue in Indonesia, many Indonesian businesspeople are prompt. Others may abide by the indigenous casual attitude towards time, jam karet (rubber time), and arrive very late.

Different rules apply to social events. Indonesians know exactly where they stand in the cultural hierarchy. If you invite Indonesians to a social event, they may ask who else is coming. Then they may make a point of arriving before higher-status guests but after lower-status guests.
