The online edition of Ethnologue (http://www.ethnologue.com) lists more than 400 extant languages in India. Of those, Hindi and English are acknowledged as India’s official—or national—languages. However, individual states in India have the right to establish additional “scheduled” languages, and they include Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Marathi, Meitei, Nepali, Oriya, Eastern Panjabi, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
