China’s official language is standard Chinese, which is based upon Mandarin. However, many Chinese will speak other dialects, such as Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Keija. Many businesspeople speak English.

The written Chinese language (which can be understood by speakers of all Chinese dialects) has been simplified in the People’s Republic of China. The PRC also changed the direction in which Chinese was written, from vertical to horizontal. Also note that written Chinese has no verb tenses (no past, no future, no subjunctive), so be certain to specify your times and dates in the context of your texts, e-mails, letters, or contracts.
