1. Australians jokingly refer to sports as their national religion. Naturally, sports make a good topic of conversation. You can divide Australian sports into activities and spectator sports. Many Aussies have a favorite activity: they play tennis or golf, cycle, surf, swim, hike, or go boating on a regular basis. (You should, too, when you go to Australia. Expect to be asked, “What’s your sport?”) Spectator sports, ranked by popularity, range from Australian-rules football—the most popular—to horse racing, rugby, cricket, and football (soccer).
