Chapter 6. Losing Like a Winner

Noticing political behavior in others that win promotions can be disheartening as you realize that charades are often accepted as reality. Sometimes people who don’t seem to deserve a promotion get one for reasons you might not see, such as going to a competitor, which could embarrass or hurt your company. Remember to always think beyond the obvious. Also realize that high-level management probably does not see some of the conduct you question in your assessment of the individual. Many times kings will take their makers along to continue the service of their own objectives, and this is a formidable problem if you are not one of them.
