Matrix management

A matrix is an organisational structure through which people report to two or more bosses. For example, the manager at Unilever responsible for ice cream sales in France might report to the head of the ice cream business in London and also to the country manager responsible for all of Unilever’s business in France. Most large firms use some sort of matrix, often with more than two dimensions. Matrix management creates many challenges for those operating in it.

When to use it

  • To structure your organisation so that you can operate effectively in a complex world.
  • To help managers understand their sometimes-conflicting responsibilities.
  • To adapt your organisation to new challenges.
