The big picture

Managers who take effective action – those who seem to make the impossible happen – rely on a combination of two critical aspects: energy and focus. In their 2002 book, Heike Bruch and Sumantra Goshal found that the most effective managers are those who put their energy into their actions and concentrate their attention on those actions. They found that by plotting the two dimensions of energy and focus against each other, a framework emerges that helps to explain managerial behaviour and the reasons for managerial (in)effectiveness.
