Introduced in 1995 by Gartner Inc., a USA-based IT research and advisory firm, a ‘hype cycle’ provides a graphic representation of the maturity, adoption and social application of technologies and applications. It visualises the path that a new technology generally takes, from its initial introduction into the market and accompanying over-enthusiasm, through a period of disillusionment, to an eventual understanding of the technology’s relevance and role in a market or domain and its maturation into useful components of broader solutions.
