The big picture

Lean thinking (Chapter 46) focuses on adding value for customers and eliminating non-value-adding steps (waste). Value stream mapping is used in lean environments to map and analyse both the value-adding and non-value-adding activities and steps in information flows and processes. It visualises which activities add value for a customer, and which do not. Because of its fixed structure, it is often possible to find substantial improvement potential and corresponding improvement actions.
