The statistician George Box* (1919–2013) wrote that ‘essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful’. Models are wrong in that they are, inevitably, generalisations and for every generalised statement you can find exceptions. They are useful in that they help us to make sense of the world.

A well-constructed business model distils knowledge and information into an easily understood framework which can be applied in new situations. The best models are timeless and those represented in this book range from 3,000 years ago to the modern day.
