Giving feedback

Many managers become nervous before giving feedback, apologising for having to raise an issue with their team members and diluting the feedback to such an extent that its intent is lost.

It was traditional to offer feedback in a ‘sandwich’ – say something positive (first slice of bread), slip in the real feedback (the filling) and quickly add another positive (second slice of bread), then sigh with relief that it was over. The method never worked because it obscured the real point of the feedback. Imagine:

You did a great job this morning, your work standards in general are not up to our expectations, but you did a really good job this morning.
