PART SIX

Resilience

In the late twentieth century, leaders and managers talked about taking the right course of action, confident that they could predict the results of their actions. In the twenty-first century we think of business as operating in times of uncertainty, ambiguity and paradox. If we cannot so easily predict the outcome of our actions we are going to make mistakes, try things that do not work and sometimes feel that we have failed. Shrinking business cycles, the push for globalisation and the emergence of new economies add to the uncertainty of the business environment. To manage in this changing climate we need to be resilient – to be able to bounce back when things are not working as we had hoped.
