The big picture

Audiences don’t care about speakers. While you may be nervous about presenting, typically the audience has not given a second thought to you until you stand up to present. Even then, you have to exaggerate your nerves before the audience really starts to take notice of them. So, while the audience may not be on your side when you present, its members are generally neutral towards you.

People remember the first and last things you say (‘the law of primacy and recency’) and if you can get the introduction to your presentation right, the audience will be much more forgiving if the main body of the presentation is a little dull!
