Action-centred leadership

The big picture

John Adair developed the action-centred leadership model in the early 1970s while working at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and later at the Industrial Society in the UK. The model sets out the need to balance management of your team, the tasks they are undertaking and the individuals within the team, and demonstrates the interrelationships between them. It is often depicted as three overlapping circles (team, task, individual), a diagram which is trademarked to John Adair. Adair synthesised aspects of the motivational theories of Herzberg and Maslow in his work.

At any one time, you may need to shift from a focus on the team to a greater focus on the individual to a focus on the task to be accomplished. ...
