Spheres of influence
The big picture
Spheres of influence is a simple tool to help you frame difficult situations to determine what is within your sphere of control, what and whom you can influence and which aspects are entirely out of your control and influence. Did you ever lie awake at night worrying about something? Try as you might you couldn’t see what to do to resolve a difficult situation or solve a particular problem. It may have been that in reality there was absolutely nothing you could do about it, but your mind worked overtime trying to find a solution.
In any situation we have three levels of influence (see Figure 61.1):
