SMART goals

The big picture

The SMART mnemonic has been the staple tool for goal and objective setting in businesses since the early 1980s, but is often poorly implemented and misinterpreted. Used well, it gives a solid basis for a well-formed goal or objective. One of the issues with SMART is that there is no standard interpretation for the acronym. In early versions it was translated as Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timebound. There is obvious redundancy in this definition – if it is achievable, then it is realistic, and vice versa. Variants include:

  • Specific, stretching
  • Measurable, meaningful
  • Achievable, agreed
  • Realistic, rewarding, relevant
  • Timebound, tangible, timely
