Reticular activating system

The big picture

Knowledge of the way that the brain helps us focus and drives out ‘noise’ is useful in helping us to focus on the things that we want, without missing out on vital things that could help us attain our goals. The reticular activating system (RAS) is a filtering system, which filters into our conscious awareness those things that are relevant to what we are particularly interested in and filters out any extraneous information. In physiological terms, the RAS is responsible for the transitions between a relaxed waking state and periods of high attention.
