Challenging assumptions is a simple and hugely powerful creative tool based on the notion that nothing is real – we have simply assumed it to be so.

When to use it

Challenging assumptions can be used for redesign of processes, systems and machines.

How to use it

Imagine that you have long used a specific process at work. Nobody has questioned its efficacy since it was first implemented, but you are aware that time has moved on and there may be a more effective approach. Working in a small group or alone, simply list all the elements or steps in the current process. These are the current ‘truths’ – they are all we know about the current process.
