Solution-focused coaching (OSKAR)

The big picture

Solution-focused coaching models focus on helping the coachee to find solutions to their problems and build on the coachee’s strengths. OSKAR is one of the better examples of this approach. Solution-focused coaching was developed by Mark McKergow and Paul Z. Jackson, consultants and speakers, from the ‘brief therapy’ work of psychotherapists Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg.

OSKAR stands for:

  • Outcome
  • Scale
  • Know-how
  • Affirm and Action
  • Review

When to use it

OSKAR works well as a developmental coaching tool, particularly with a coachee who already has some idea of how to achieve a goal.
