Fogging

The big picture

If you find yourself being challenged or verbally intimidated by others, often they simply want a good argument and you are their target. Rather than becoming embroiled in a heated dispute, use fogging, the technique of agreeing with the bare truth of their accusations so that they have nowhere further to go.

Fogging knocks the wind out of the sails of aggressive people and is an easy form of assertive verbal self-defence.

When to use it

When someone accuses you of a particular behaviour, criticises an action or simply seems to want to pick a fight with you and is verbally aggressive.
