360° feedback

The big picture

360° feedback (also known as multi-rater feedback) is a formalised approach to gathering feedback from peers, bosses, direct reports and, in some instances, customer or clients, to offer us the most rounded view of how others perceive us. Typically, 360° feedback is based on agreed competencies. It was first used in business in the 1950s and has gained enormously in popularity since then. It is intended as a development tool, although some argue that it should be used for appraisal, too.

When to use it
