The big picture

Very often you will be unsure of which elements are relevant to a problem you are trying to solve and which are not. The is/is not matrix is a simple device to help you to focus on the pertinent points and eliminate ‘noise’ in your thinking. The is/is not matrix is credited to Charles Kepner and Benjamin Tregoe, who established a management consultancy in 1958 in New Jersey and developed a more complex matrix for root-cause analysis. They believed that the end goal in any decision making, rather than to make a perfect choice, is to make the best possible choice.

The is/is not matrix asks you to focus on four questions:

  • What?
  • Where?
  • When?
  • Extent?
