Pink’s model of motivation

The big picture

Former US presidential speech writer Daniel H. Pink suggested in his book, Drive, that there are just three things that drive us:

  • Autonomy: allowing people to control much of what they do and how they do it.
  • Mastery: allowing people to develop skills in areas that matter to them.
  • Purpose: the desire to contribute to something more enduring and greater than ourselves.

When to use it

Consider this alongside the other motivational theories and pick the one that seems most relevant to the individual you are managing. All these theories are generalisations, and one may work better than another for a specific team member.
