After the killing of the holy man Imam Reza in 818, a mausoleum was established at Mashhad, whose name means ‘the place of sacrifice’. It has been rebuilt and remodelled several times, and is now set beneath a spectacular golden dome, at the focus of the largest mosque in Iran, which is second in capacity only to the Great Mosque in Mecca.
