The sanctuary at Delphi, on the lower slopes of Mount Parnassus – where Apollo and the muses had their home – was among the most important ancient Greek shrines. Calliope, the muse of epic poetry, was the mother of the half-mortal Orpheus. Orpheus lived here, charmed the wild beats with his singing, visited the underworld and was torn limb from limb by a mob of women.
