During the nineteenth century there was an increase in European knowledge about the architecture of earlier times and far-flung places, and buildings were made to evoke all sorts of things. Roman classical architecture continued to be an inspiration for buildings that needed to establish their importance, but with advances in archaeological knowledge the purity of older classical Greek architecture came to have greater cultural prestige for an educated elite.
