The freeways of Los Angeles are the largest building works in one of the world’s largest cities. They serve the automobile, which is the dominant mode of transport there. Most major cities work by bringing people together in places where they can form crowds and develop a sense of collective identity – whether the place is the Agora of ancient Athens (pages 306–307) or Fifth Avenue in New York.
