The Eiffel Tower was overtaken as the world’s tallest structure in 1930, on the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York City, but the Chrysler Building ceded precedence the following year to the Empire State Building, which had been steadily rising at the same time only a few blocks away. The Empire State held the title until 1972, the year that saw the opening of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Since then, the tallest structures have had relatively brief reigns.
