The Piazza del Campo in Siena (above left) took shape in the early fourteenth century, making an appropriate civic setting for activities that must already have been taking place. It is an open space, which used to be in between three settlements on neighbouring hills. The settlements grew together but retained separate identities as neighbourhoods in the larger city.
