One of Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s late fantasies was revealed in a series of disturbingly plausible drawings for a royal palace on the Acropolis of Athens (pages 168–69). Such a building would have destroyed a great deal of archaeological evidence, but would have made a fine place for Otto Wittelsbach, the Bavarian king of newly independent Greece, to receive foreign visitors.
