In 1883 a German entrepreneur called Emil Moritz Rathenau formed the German Edison Society for Applied Electricity, which evolved a few years later into the General Electricity Company, the Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG). In 1907 the architect Peter Behrens was engaged as a consultant; he designed not only buildings for the company but also products and advertising. The stylistic coherence Behrens shaped out of this disparate activity is generally seen to be the beginning of the idea of ‘corporate identity’.
