Manhattan’s two major railway stations were, and still are, Pennsylvania Station and the Grand Central Terminal. Pennsylvania Station, commonly known as Penn, was designed in 1910 by the architects McKim, Mead and White in an imposing neoclassical style, with a peristyle of Doric columns, a huge central hall the size of St Peter’s in Rome (pages 32–33), modelled on the vaulted central hall of the Baths of Caracalla (pages 270–71). Charles McKim had studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and absorbed its methods of composition.
