Preface

The Spring Framework is very mature. It has been embraced by the industry and attracted a strong user base. It is challenging to write on a subject that has already been inundated with so many books, manuals, articles, and tutorials, including videos.

So, what is my motivation for writing this book?

I have come in contact with many programmers and developers who sometimes stumble on the basics. They often feel shy about asking colleagues for help. I have also met a few who have had no prior Spring experience before being pushed onto Spring projects. They were given no training or guidance, but were expected to contribute overnight. There’s a third group of people who are genuinely interested in learning Spring but may be put off by the big texts or manuals. These people are enthusiastic and want to hit the ground running, but they don’t have the time or patience to read and digest volumes of data! They only have time to read a simple book, understand the technology, and jump straight into practice. Once they get a hang of it, their grey matter will ask for more and more.

When I want to learn something new, I like to start with basics (I may lean toward the last category), experiment with code, move an inch further, burn a bit of code, and so on. Once I “feel” the technology, then I wish to quench my thirst. At that point, I seek out the advanced, in-depth manuals and specs, and of course, the big books.

This is my motive behind the Just Spring series of books. Simple yet powerful.

My aim is to deliver simple, straight-to-the-point, no nonsense, and example-driven books on Spring projects. And of course, I’d like them to be page-turners and easy reads.

These books should give you enough knowledge and confidence to start working on the real-world projects.

The current book covers the backbone of Spring—the core (it will be renamed Just Spring Core soon). If you are interested in learning nothing but Spring, then Just Spring is your companion. If you wish to get introduced to Spring quickly and precisely, or would like to refresh your knowledge on Spring in couple of hours, or have only a weekend to learn Spring before you start working on it on Monday, this is the book that you should choose. It does not cover any other Spring subjects such as Spring MVC or Spring Integration. They are covered by different books in the Just Spring series.

I sincerely thank you all for embracing this book. I have received positive feedback, reviews, comments, suggestions, and praises that have certainly encouraged me to do more. I hope you have all enjoyed it as much as I have writing it! Please get in touch with me, even if you are unhappy with me or my writings.

Other Just Spring books are on their way! Stay tuned.
