Custom Commands

Junos automation provides a rich set of tools that ease the transition to Junos for network and security administrators. (Chapter 3 introduces Junos automation.) Junos automation lets you instruct the Junos OS to execute a sequence of tasks and commands tailored to your needs.

For example, with this toolset, you can customize operational commands and automate configuration changes. You could customize show output to familiar display listings so that the CLI screen appears familiar to new users. Or you can request confirmation for commands that might have a big impact on your network, such as the command clear bgp neighbor, which restarts all BGP peering sessions. (Refer to Chapter 13 for more about BGP.)

As a second example, you may want to allow new users to change a small part of the configuration, but only through guided, tailored entries to the CLI. With this type of custom automation, you can let new users with less expertise change the configuration, but only in a limited and controlled way. Consider a provisioning script that can ask relevant questions for a new connection and then automatically commit the needed configuration. With this type of automation, inexperienced users can safely provision new customers, where the automation scripts assure that the users are following established configuration guidelines, even for complex services such as those requiring advanced policy settings.
