Chapter 24. Goals of Configuration Automation

In the past few years, the size of networks has exploded and the complexity of the protocols on which they are based has had to keep pace. The problem for modern networks is that the number of highly technical engineers has not grown adequately to match this expansion. Engineers have less time to plan, review, and monitor the configuration of devices, and many of these tasks are falling to junior-level engineers who may not have the breadth of experience, but rather have a deep technical understanding of only one or two components of network topology.

With senior engineers spread so thinly and junior technicians possibly dealing with network components outside their area of expertise, it is necessary to prevent human error from causing network downtime. JUNOS Software has specific features that provide automated configuration and validation for network devices that can help a great deal in this area, and tools to better protect against human error for necessary manual configuration.
