Chapter 19. Choosing, Migrating, and Merging Interior Gateway Protocols

Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs) provide the foundation of traffic flow and control inside an Autonomous System (AS). This chapter discusses the two most commonly used industry-standard IGPs: Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS). The first section examines the advantages and disadvantages of each protocol, and also looks at how each one supports high availability. The next section examines what is involved in migrating from one of these IGPs to the other. The chapter finishes with considerations for merging networks running the same IGP.
