AN ESSENTIAL part of a journalist’s job is to know where and how to get information and who to ask.
In some ways the sourcing of materials has been made easier in recent years. Public access to databases has increased and the driver for openness in business and government has not been without success. But in other ways sourcing has been made more difficult: too many departments and press officers are as likely to conceal information as to dispense it.
