THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR, FREQUENT UPDATES

On your Windows or Mac computer, you regularly need to install minor updates. These updates frequently deal with the security of your computer. If you don't make the updates, you leave your computer more vulnerable to hacking attempts and viruses.

Likewise, your Joomla website also requires regular updates when they are released. Many of these updates are security releases, so it's very important to install the releases in a timely manner to keep your website up to date.

Joomla's download page (www.joomla.org/download.html) includes a form to enter your e-mail address to receive security updates and reminders when new versions of Joomla are released. I recommend strongly that you subscribe to this mailing list. Joomla developers typically update Joomla every 6–8 weeks, so that is how often you can expect to receive e-mail notification about the new updates.
