UNDERSTANDING GROUPS

We assigned Samara to the Manager group, but what does that really mean? There are seven levels of groups within Joomla, each with its own level of permissions:

  • Registered: Can log into the front end of the website only
  • Author: All Registered permissions, and they can create and edit their own content (but not other content). The content is not published automatically until it has been reviewed by a user at the Publisher level or higher.
  • Editor: All Registered and Author permissions, and they can edit any content on the website, whether it is their content or not
  • Publisher: All Registered, Author, and Editor permissions, and they can publish and unpublish content on the website
  • Manager: All Publisher permissions, and they can log into the back end of the website, create and edit menu items, edit installed components
  • Administrator: All Manager permissions, and they can create users (Administrator level and lower only) and install extensions
  • Super Administrator: All Manager and Administrator permissions, plus the capability to edit the Global Configuration and edit and change templates

Which user level is right for the users you need to create? Of course, it depends. Here are some general guidelines for you to follow:

  • Typically, you should be the only Super Administrator on your website, unless there's a very good reason to do otherwise.
  • If your users are only going to be viewing password-protected content, then the Registered group is appropriate.
