CREATING A LINK TO ANOTHER WEBSITE

Occasionally, you need to link to another website entirely, one not associated with your website. Fictitious Elementary School may wish to link to the school district's website, to resources for children, to kid-friendly websites, and so forth. If you want several pages of links of resources, you could use the Web Links component to do this (covered Lesson 25). However, if you want to link within an article to another website, that is also possible using TinyMCE.

Return to editing your About Fictitious Elementary School article, and highlight the words “our town” in the article.

In another tab or another window in your web browser, open the web page for your town's or city's website. My hometown is Keene, New Hampshire, and the address is www.ci.keene.nh.us.

Highlight the web address in your browser's window by clicking on it (you should see the highlight appear). Then go to the Edit menu and pick Copy, which will copy the address.

Now switch back to the back end of Joomla and click the icon for the link, as we did before for links within our own website (refer to Figure 11-6).

Paste the web address in the field for Link URL, as shown in Figure 11-8. Now change the Target dropdown to Open in New Window (_blank). Click Insert to insert the link into the page, and save the article.

When you click this link, a new tab or a new window will open, with your city's website within it.
