CATEGORY PARAMETERS

While we're in the editing screen for our History category, let's look at some of the other category options available. If this information looks and sounds familiar, that's because it is! There is very little difference between configuring a category and a section. The major exception is that a category must be assigned to a section.

In order to create a category, you must specify a title and the section to which the category belongs. The other information described here is strictly optional:

  • Published: Located just under the Alias field, this indicates whether the category is visible on the public website. If you look at the front end of the website, you'll see nothing has changed since we first looked at it a few lessons ago. Categories usually do not show up directly on the website, but if a category is unpublished, the articles associated with it are not viewable on the front end either.
  • Category Order: Enables you to put your categories in a specific order within the Category Manager.
  • Access Level: Indicates who can see this particular category (and the articles within it). In general, you'll want to set this to Public, which means anyone visiting the front end of the website can see the content without logging in. Registered and Special require a login to view the content. You'll learn more about Registered and Special in Lesson 32.
